The Ponderosa Lemon is a remarkable citrus variety known for producing enormous lemons that can grow several times larger than traditional lemons. A natural hybrid between a Lemon and a Citron, this unique tree produces moderately juicy fruit with the classic tart lemon flavor that's ideal for cooking, baking, fresh lemonade, and other culinary uses.

In addition to its impressive fruit, the Ponderosa Lemon Tree is highly ornamental, producing large, fragrant blossoms alongside vibrant flushes of bright green new growth throughout the year. While it is one of the more cold-sensitive citrus varieties and develops prominent thorns, its extraordinary fruit size and continuous production make it a favorite among home gardeners and citrus collectors.

About Our Trees

Why are Ponderosa Lemons so much larger than regular lemons?

The Ponderosa Lemon is a natural hybrid between a lemon and a citron, which gives it its unusually large fruit. Individual lemons can grow several times the size of standard lemons while still offering the tart flavor prized for cooking and baking.

Can the Ponderosa Lemon Tree be grown in a container?

Yes. Dwarf and semi-dwarf Ponderosa Lemon Trees perform well in large containers with well-draining soil and full sun. Container growing also makes it easier to move the tree indoors or to a protected location during cold weather.

How do I care for a Ponderosa Lemon Tree?

Plant your Ponderosa Lemon Tree in a sunny location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Water consistently while the tree becomes established, fertilize regularly with a citrus-specific fertilizer, and prune lightly to maintain its shape. Because this variety is more sensitive to cold than many other citrus trees, protect it whenever freezing temperatures are expected.

How can I protect my tree from citrus greening and pests?

We highly recommend protecting your young trees from Asian psyllids and citrus greening (HLB) with a tree defender. For more information visit: www.thetreedefender.com

Should I mulch around my tree?

Do not pile mulch against the trunk. Excess moisture around the trunk can lead to decline, disease, and possible tree loss.
