About Our Trees

Why are Blood Oranges red on the inside?

Blood Oranges develop their beautiful red or deep crimson flesh from natural pigments called anthocyanins. Cooler nighttime temperatures during fruit development help bring out their distinctive coloring. The intensity of the red color can vary depending on the variety, climate, and growing conditions.

What do Blood Oranges taste like?

Blood Oranges have a deliciously sweet, juicy flavor with a refreshing balance of citrus tartness. Many varieties also have subtle berry-like notes, making them excellent for fresh eating, juicing, smoothies, desserts, and salads.

When is the harvest season for Blood Oranges?

Blood Oranges generally ripen during the winter through early spring, typically December through March in Florida, depending on the variety. Popular varieties such as Moro, Tarocco, and Sanguinelli may have slightly different harvest periods. Cooler temperatures can help develop their signature red flesh.

How can I protect my tree from citrus greening and pests?

We highly recommend protecting your young trees from Asian psyllids and citrus greening (HLB) with a tree defender. For more information visit: www.thetreedefender.com

Should I mulch around my tree?

Do not pile mulch against the trunk. Excess moisture around the trunk can lead to decline, disease, and possible tree loss.
